NOPL Brewerton is one of the awardees in Round 2 funding of the New York Forward statewide economic development program. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the selection of four New York Forward project proposals in Brewerton and seven in Canastota recently.
The $400,000 in funding, part of a total of $4.5 million awarded to projects in Brewerton, will support the creation of a visitor center at the library, in addition to a new public meeting room, outdoor seating areas, a small café space, and an additional accessible restroom. Erin Cassidy, NOPL Brewerton Manager and Project Lead, highlighted the renovation plans: “The welcome center will be a hub for residents and visitors to explore Brewerton’s many offerings. Redesigned areas will also feature amenities like a café and public restrooms for park visitors and community members. Flexible spaces and furniture will allow the library to host a variety of programs, adapting to our changing community. Exhibits will showcase our local history and nautical heritage as the gateway to Oneida Lake.”
Local Planning Committees, made up of community representatives, stakeholders, and area leaders, were formed in communities across the state to develop a Strategic Investment Plan and review potential projects to recommend for New York Forward program support. The Hamlet of Brewerton Local Planning Committee, comprised of members from Cicero and Hastings, recommended fourteen project applications to the state.
Wayne Chase, President of NOPL’s Board of Trustees said “The renovation will serve the Brewerton residents and library patrons at several levels: It helps us achieve the goals of NOPL’s 5-year Strategic Plan by expanding the library’s capacity to serve as a community hub for information, meeting, and collaboration. It serves Brewerton by helping to attract visitors to local businesses, cultural, and historic sites while highlighting its rich maritime resources and history. It supports New York State Forward’s economic development and quality of life goals.”
The state award is anticipated to cover about 2/3 of the project costs. To fund the balance of the project, NOPL Brewerton will apply for a New York State Construction Grant and cover a portion of the project from library reserves. Work on the library renovation is expected to begin in 2026.
