The Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) is proud to provide free menstrual product dispensers in all library branches. These specialty dispensers, supplied by Aunt Flow—a woman-owned company founded to address period poverty—are stocked with 100% organic tampons and pads. This initiative is part of a growing national movement to improve menstrual equity, ensuring that everyone has access to the basic products they need. It also helps to reduce the stigma surrounding the natural and normal body function of menstruation.

Addressing Period Poverty in Our Community

Period poverty is a significant public health concern that affects the well-being and dignity of many people in our community. According to Period-Action.org, period poverty refers to the limited or inadequate access to menstrual products or menstrual health education due to financial constraints or negative socio-cultural stigmas. Without access to these essential supplies, individuals may miss school, work, or other activities, leading to increased inequality.

By offering menstrual products for free, NOPL hopes to create a more inclusive and equitable experience for all library users. This effort aligns with the library’s mission to support education, discovery, and community well-being.

Encouraging Education and Open Conversations

Providing free menstrual products is only one part of the solution. Just as importantly, NOPL encourages open conversations about menstruation and offers a variety of educational resources to support menstrual health awareness. From books for all ages to online materials and community programs, the library serves as a welcoming place to learn and share information.

If you would like to explore more about periods, menstrual health, or body positivity, visit the library’s catalog or speak with a librarian—in person, by phone, or through social media messaging. Together, we can help eliminate stigma, promote understanding, and support the health of everyone in our community.
