This blog focuses on providing news and updates about the Brewerton Bridge Project. We will post updates on the project as we hear of them!

Update 1/7/26: The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that the U.S. Route 11 bridge over the Oneida River in the Hamlet of Brewerton, Onondaga County, and the Town of Hastings, Oswego County, will close and adjacent to the structure, a temporary one lane bridge will open, with alternating traffic controlled by a signal, beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, through December 2026, to accommodate a bridge replacement project.

Please note that access to Bennett Street from Route 11 is currently closed. It is expected to remain closed for much of the year. Below is an alternate route to visit NOPL Brewerton.

“The Route 11 Bridge Through the Ages” program available on YouTube!

On June 21, 2025, Fort Brewerton & Oliver Stevens Blockhouse Museum and NOPL Brewerton Library presented a history of the Route 11 Bridge over the Oneida River. Engineer Casey Burns and Curator Donny Abend discussed the bridge’s significance and evolution over many centuries, exploring the bridge’s role in local history, from its early construction to its current replacement project, highlighting its impact on trade, travel, and community development. If you missed it, you can view it here.

UPDATES
as of 02/25/25

According to a press release on 2/19/25 by NYS Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, work to replace the bridge over the Oneida River, on Route 11 between Brewerton and Hastings, is set to begin soon. The bridge is close to Bennett Street, where NOPL Brewerton is located. Here are a couple highlights:

“Bridge Structure Is New York State’s First Ever Gussetless Truss Bridge and the Second Gussetless Truss Bridge in the Nation”

“. . . traffic will be shifted to a temporary [one-lane] bridge that will accommodate alternating one-way traffic . . .with vehicle-detection sensors in place to adjust motorists’ wait time based on traffic flow . . .”

The complete press release can be accessed HERE.

Work is projected to begin in Fall 2025 to demolish the existing bridge. It is anticipated that the traffic will move to the one-lane temporary bridge in November 2025 with new bridge completion anticipated for September 2026.

The Hamlet of Brewerton is anticipating an infrastructure upgrade as the bridge replacement project to overhaul the Route 11 bridge over the Oneida River kicks into high gear. In 2025, we anticipate DOT workers will start building a temporary, one-lane bridge onto which traffic will be diverted while the permanent bridge is being rebuilt. Travel times over the bridge will likely be affected along Route 11 North and South from Brewerton Elementary School up to Brewerton Speedway especially at peak times like rush hour and during Speedway events. You can monitor current travel times and plan alternate routes at 511ny.org.

  • The Local Planning Committee is currently reviewing projects submitted for New York Forward funding.
  • LPC presentation documents available to the public can be viewed here (https://ciceronewyork.net/ny-forward/)
  • A public meeting was held by Cicero and Hastings at the Brewerton Fire Department on 9/17/24 at 6:00 pm at the Brewerton Fire Department. Here are some updates from that meeting:

The New York Forward process, requirements, and submitted projects were showcased. The New York Forward Project Manager from the Office of Planning, Development & Community Infrastructure, a part of the NYS Department of State, and a representative from Stantec, the consultant hired by the State to prepare the Strategic Investment Plan with the help of the local residents, asked attendees to comment on the projects. This was echoed by experts from Barton & Loguidice who are working with the Town of Hastings on the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program application. Projects for both initiatives received great feedback from those present, around 55 participants total.

Community members who were unable to attend the meeting can provide feedback on all the projects until October 4 at this link: https://forms.office.com/r/LqwnPScLLu

At the conclusion of the feedback session, NYS Department of Transportation representatives spoke about the Route 11 bridge replacement project.

David Smith, the regional director, introduced John Banewicz, the engineer-in-charge of the project. David shared that John would be available at a construction office next to Brewerton Ace Hardware. Until then, questions about the project can be directed to: (315) 448-7322, the regional construction office. No timeline is available as DOT staff are waiting for the schedule from the contractor who was awarded the contract in June. John shared that once traffic is diverted onto the temporary, one-lane bridge, the contractor has about 330 days until traffic must go back onto the finished, permanent bridge. In addition, the contract specifies that the entire project must be completed by October 2026.

If you live in Brewerton, you know changes are coming! NOPL Brewerton Manager Erin has collected a great deal of information for you on the Brewerton Streetscapes and bridge replacement projects. Above you will see a suggested alternate route to NOPL Brewerton to help you avoid temporarily congested areas.
The project is expected to last from April until September 2024. Construction will start at the Northeast corner (just to the north of Dailey’s Pour House) and proceed south on the eastern side of the street until that side is largely done. Construction will proceed to the northwest corner (just to the north of Rosie’s Corner) and proceed south to Guy Young until that whole side is completed. Typically, construction will run 7am – 4pm and construction is expected to pause before 3pm on Fridays to accommodate Speedway traffic. We have been told that construction should not affect business operations and that if driveways are inaccessible, it will only be for a short time. The police chief will have staff check traffic conditions periodically and may set a flagger out to control traffic. Traffic will largely be two-way but there will be points at which it will be one-way. For non-emergency calls about traffic, contact the police at (315) 425-2333.
  • This streetscapes project incorporates traffic calming techniques to help slow traffic and increase pedestrian safety. Some of these techniques include: larger-than-minimum-width roadways and on-street parking spots, streetlights similar to those near Riverfront Park, all with 20 amp electrical accesses, flush bump outs to give the appearance of a narrower roadway to encourage cars to slow that will also not impede plowing, brick stamped areas on which snow can be stored, and rapid flashing beacons to alert motorists to the presence of pedestrians who have the right-of-way, among others.

  • The Route 11 bridge constructions bid cycle will conclude in May when the project will be awarded. DOT will likely host a community meeting at that point with updates.

  • The Town is partnering with the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council to complete a trail network feasibility study which may include Micron’s campus as a trail destination; the trail will largely be on National Grid’s rights of way.

  • A federal Transportation Alternatives Project grant cycle will conclude in May, and the Town is hoping to have funding from that grant to build sidewalks from Guy Young Rd to Orangeport Rd.

  • Streetscapes project questions can be directed to C&S Engineer-in-Charge Mark Anastas; his contact info is available at the library.
