NOPL Cicero has put a dynamic new spin on its Sensory Play program for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers by developing different themes!
The purpose of Sensory Play is to create a shared learning environment where children can explore, play, and develop while their caregivers participate alongside them. These programs give children an opportunity to learn through play while strengthening their cognitive, language, fine-motor, gross-motor, and sensory development. At the same time, their caregivers can talk, exchange ideas, build friendships, and develop a sense of community.
As we know, the library is more than a place to borrow books. It’s also a place of gathering, where families can connect, learn, and feel supported. As the Youth Services Librarian for NOPL Cicero, my goal is for Sensory Play to be more than just an activity at the library. I want it to be a fun and welcoming space where children can learn and explore, caregivers can connect with their children and other families, and everyone feels a sense of community. By creating new and engaging themes, I hope to make Sensory Play a program that families enjoy and look forward to attending.
NOPL Cicero’s Sensory Play programs are held at least once a month on a Friday, 10:30 am – 11:30 am. Join us this fall for a magical time!
September 18: Splash & Play – Babies and toddlers are invited to splash, pour, and explore through gentle water play. This sensory play time supports early learning, motor skills, and curiosity in a relaxed, hands-on environment. Caregivers participate alongside their children—extra clothes recommended!
October 9: Messy Masterpieces – Explore colors, textures, and creativity with your baby or toddler through painting and art-based sensory play.
November 20: Mini Market – Celebrate Thanksgiving with hands-on sensory fun for babies and toddlers! Explore the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of play food and grocery themed activities.
December 3: Gingerbread & Giggles – Join us for sweet, hands-on fun! Babies and toddlers will explore the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of gingerbread themed sensory play, supporting early learning and motor skills in a cozy, holiday inspired setting.
December 18: Festive Fun – Celebrate the magic of the season with hands-on sensory fun! Babies and toddlers, along with their caregivers, can explore the sights, sounds, and textures of holiday-themed activities.
