Who knew that graphic novels could be fast-paced, funny, and fierce at the same time? I picked up this book hoping to find a graphic novel mystery to share in NOPL’s Mystery and Mayhem book group. I discovered an entertaining gem set in a Quebec neighborhood that has character, lovable folks, and plenty of intrigue!
Rebecca is the mother of nine-month-old Lucie. While feeding Lucie, she notices a kidnapping at her neighbor’s home. She suspects a murder when she hears the neighbor, Eduard, has gone missing and takes it upon herself to find out what happened.
Rebecca interviews the elderly woman that Eduardo assisted, the woman’s family, and the police–who are holding back on a devious white-collar businessman. The odds stack up against the scheme and the police when Rebecca talks with Eduardo’s brother, who was the last one to hear from Eduardo. Lucie’s gurgles, cries, and laughter make for a laugh-out-loud mystery in this graphic novel by Pascal Girard.
I admire the illustrations and the dialog, including Rebecca’s snarky commentary on the rude people she encounters with Lucie on her side. The storyline follows easily with twists in the investigation as Rebecca goes undercover as a business owner, detective, social worker and any cover she can find to catch the killer.
