Ahhh, NetFlix. They have movies, original shows and network TV shows. But you need your own subscription, right? Wrong! Did you know that you can access Netflix by simply borrowing a Roku from one of the NOPL libraries? A Roku is a device that will let you stream NetFlix (among lots of other channels too) to your television via your WiFi. The only thing you’ll need to borrow a Roku is your library card!
Rokus are actually pretty easy to set up. If you have an HD TV simply use the HD connector; if your TV isn’t HD, there is an RCA connector (that red, white and yellow plug) that comes with the kit. Once it is plugged into your TV and an electrical outlet, go to the settings and connect to your WiFi. Then just click the Netflix button (don’t worry – instructions are included in each Roku kit).
It’s easy to search Netflix. If you are looking for a specific TV show or movie use the search function and type in the title. If you’re not sure what you want to watch, Netflix is divided into categories you can browse: family movies, horror, comedy, etc. There is also a category for recently added movies. I was delighted to see the movie Avalanche Sharks had been added; whether you enjoy bad shark movies, a hilarious comedy or a good mystery, Netflix has it all!
Using the remote is also easy. It would be similar to your TV/DVD remote. You can rewind, fast forward and pause what you are watching. In each Roku kit there is an instruction booklet but you can always call the library or even stop in if you have any questions. We are here to help, so don’t be afraid to ask!
As mentioned earlier, Netflix also has original TV shows. Were you a fan of the amazing TV show Full House? Well, you can watch the spinoff Fuller House on Netflix! Fuller House features DJ, Stephanie and Kimmy all grown up with special appearances by Danny, Uncle Jesse, Aunt Becky and of course Joey. Even Jesse and Becky’s twins, Nicky and Alex make a quick appearance in the first episode. I recently binge watched the show (8 out of 13 episodes in a row!) with a friend and we both enjoyed it. It was a nice way to end the week. I do not have Netflix myself so it makes me happy that NOPL lends out Rokus to their patrons, otherwise I would not of been able to watch Fuller House.
If you are looking for a lighthearted comedy, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a great choice. Also, one of the creators of Kimmy Schmidt is none other than Tina Fey! There is even an original TV show for the horror fans. Like werewolves? Then check out Hemlock Grove. Are you a superhero fan? Then check out Daredevil and Jessica Jones (note: these are geared towards adults)! There are also original TV series for kids! They have Richie Rich, Turbo Fast, and Veggietales in the house.
There are also many upcoming Netflix shows that sound promising. One in particular I’m looking forward to is Gilmore Girls! Gilmore Girls was a show I enjoyed watching with my mother when I was in high school and college. Netflix is bringing Gilmore Girls back with 4 brand new episodes that will be 90 minutes each!
These are only a few of the Netflix original TV series, there is so much more for you and your family to enjoy. Ask a librarian about borrowing a Roku from the library today!
