The Junior Gardener’s Program

If your children enjoy spending time outside, learning about the environment, or growing plants, they will enjoy the Junior Gardening Program at the LibraryFarm located outside the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Cicero.

Each fun-filled session is based around a science topic; classes are planned outdoors in the sun but on rainy days can be inside the library.

Some class examples are:

  • Learning to start seedlings and seed saving
  • Learning about habitats for beneficial insect pollinators
  • Soil testing and analysis
  • Building solar ovens and making s’mores

Kids will enjoy time in the Junior Gardener’s very own “5 Senses Garden”.  This garden is designed specifically for children. During the summer the Junior Gardener’s will use this space to plant seeds, care for plants, learn about soil, and pick what they grow.

The Program

The LibraryFarm schedules one to two Junior Gardener’s classes each week. Children can be registered for the full program or sign-up individually for each class. The Junior Gardener’s Program runs June through September and is recommended for ages 8-12.
