Get a Library Card this September

Library Card Sign-up Month

The Most Important School Supply of All

Book bags, notebooks, t-shirts, jeans,

There’s no end to the list of supplies, or so it seems.

And just when you think that you’re all done,

We suggest that you add another one.

This last supply is worth its weight in gold,

And with all the things you can do with it, it never gets old.

You can have an adventure, find a new love,

Study the classics, or anything you can dream of!

It’s a library card, if you haven’t already guessed,

And there are so many reasons we think it’s the best!

Northern Onondaga Public Libraries (NOPL) are proud to join the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Card Sign-up Month throughout September.  We encourage everyone who doesn’t already have a card to visit the library and sign up for one!

A NOPL library card entitles you to preferred access to NOPL materials which include new books by popular authors, magazines, DVDs and CDs. Use your card to access digitized newspapers and genealogy resources at the library.  Increasingly, the library has a “digital branch” and your card lets you access free learning resources wherever you are.  Traveling to Spain?  Use Rocket Languages to prepare for your trip.  Studying for a test? Use LearningExpress Library to take practice exams for hundreds of tests including GED, SAT, CLEP, GRE, basic and advanced skills for students of all ages. And when homework is done, your library card will let you download eBooks, audiobooks, music, and videos.  Beginning this October, NOPL cardholders will have access to a wide selection of popular magazines to read online, download and keep. Watch for news about Zinio!

To sign up for a library card, adults need a valid photo ID that shows a current Onondaga County mailing address.  Children applying for a library card should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Out of County residents may obtain a NOPL library card for a $35 annual fee.

If you have any questions or are ready to sign up, stop in to our Brewerton, Cicero or North Syracuse branches today!

NOPL @ Cicero is participating in the  Imagination Foundation’s 2014 Global Cardboard Challenge. We invite kids, teens, and families to participate by constructing carnival or arcade games made of cardboard. A Maker Club prep session will be held on Thursday, October 2 in order to work on the games, but we encourage you to get a head start on them at home. The creations will then be featured at our Cardboard Carnival on Saturday, October 4 from 1-4 pm.
