Summer Reading Program

June kicks off the 2014 Summer Reading Programs! This year’s children’s theme is “Fizz, Boom, Read”, which mixes science with summer reading. The Teen Reading program, SPARK, is made up of list of activities, that when completed, earn readers badges that can later be traded in for prizes.

There are a variety of activities for all ages at each NOPL location. Take a look at our events calendar to review and register for upcoming events. Summer Reading Programs run late June to early August with many programs requiring registration. If you sign up online for an event you will receive an e-mail reminder one day in advance in your email inbox. Please let us know as early as possible if you cannot attend an event so we may let those on the waiting list fill your spot.

North Syracuse Junior High and Northern Onondaga Public Library teamed up to present, “Do Over, an Art and Literacy Project”. The Do Over Project allowed 9th grade Media Art students to take on the responsibilities of a Cover Art Designer and create a book cover and book jacket for their favorite storybooks. All artwork was judged and juried by Cicero Elementary, grades K-4. Below are winners from 2014. Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all who participated and helped make this project a success!

Maker Club Defined.

What do you do at Maker Club?
We make things! At each session, we’ll focus on a different DIY.org skill area (cardboard, Perler beads, tape, mechanical engineering, and others!). Choose from suggested projects, or come up with your own. You can also get ideas for more things to make at home, work together on ideas, help brainstorm future Club projects, and show off your work.

Who is Maker Club for?
Children and teens ages 7 and up. With that in mind, children 10 and under will need help with the projects and must be accompanied by an adult. In Maker Club, we use real tools, some of which are sharp or hot – Maker Club projects are not appropriate for preschoolers.

Do I need to sign up for DIY.org to be a part of Maker Club?
Nope! DIY.org is just one way to share your work with others and ask questions. You don’t need to sign up if you don’t want to.

Do I need to come to every session, or stay for the whole session?
No, and no. You can come to as many or as few session as you want, and stay for a short time or for the whole two hours.
